SC State Defeats Norfolk State 2-1 in Women’s Softball Conference Series

Wins Conference Series for the First Time in Two Seasons

So., R. Johnson, went 2-1 over the weekend.
Orangeburg, SC—The SC State Lady Bulldogs finished 2-1 with the Norfolk State Spartans in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball three-game series. This marks the first time in two seasons that the Lady Bulldogs has won a conference series. The series, which was held this past weekend (Apr. 17-18), was contested at the Lady Bulldog Softball Field on the campus of SC State.
SC State (7-31, 3-6 MEAC) dominated the first game of the double-header on Saturday putting up eight runs by the bottom of the fourth. Norfolk State (10-22, 3-6 MEAC) put up one run in three-of-the-next four innings as they fell in Game One 8-3. 
Game Two of the double-header began a little more competitively as the teams stayed close, as they headed into the top of the fifth inning tied at 1-1. The Lady Bulldogs opened the game up in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs to jump ahead of the Spartans, 5-1. The Lady Bulldogs put up one additional run and allowed just two Norfolk State runs over the next two innings en route to the 6-3 Game Two victory to secure the overall series.
Game Three of the series belonged to Norfolk State as they won Game Three of the series 6-2. The Spartan's put up one run in the first, one in the second, three in the third and one in the fifth innings. The Lady Bulldogs two runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore pitcher Raven Johnson went 2-1 over the weekend with 10 strikeouts. Alyssa Velazquez was the loser in Games One and Two and Elizabeth Castaneda was the winner in Game Three for the Spartans.
SC State will host Presbyterian College tomorrow (Tuesday, Apr. 20) at 1 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Greenville, SC to take on Furman on Wednesday.
