Alumni Spotlight: Off the Court with Coach Garrett

We had the chance to sit down with former SC State women's basketball player Regina Garrett. Coach Garrett is in her first season as assistant women's basketball coach after a two-year stint with nationally ranked Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, MO. During her collegiate career at SC State (2016-2018), Garrett nailed over 20 3-pointers, grabbed 80 rebounds, and dished out over 40 assists. She began her coaching career as a assistant at Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute (2020-2021) in Hudson, NC. She previously served as a graduate assistant at the University of Virginia where she worked under WNBA Hall of Famer, Tina Thompson. Garrett recruited and coached nine All-Region selections, one NJCAA First Team All-American, one WBCA All-American, and one WBCA All-American Honorable Mention.

Q: What made you decide to come back as a coach for SC State?

A: I love my time here at SC State and I always knew that I was going to come back in some capacity, so when the opportunity presented itself, I had to take it; I jumped right on it.

Q: What would you say was one of the biggest challenges transitioning from a player to a coach?

A: When I was a graduate assistant, it was knowing that you must have different relationships because you're not really on the team anymore, so being able to build that boundary between the team and transitioning into talking to the coaches and learning that side was the biggest one; the boundaries part.

Q: What would you tell your younger self as a player that you would as a coach?

A: You are not working as hard as you said you were, so work harder!
