ORANGEBURG, SC – The South Carolina State track and field teams will host the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Track Classic Saturday (Apr. 19) beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Lorry H. Dawkins Track Facility on the campus. The public is invited to attend and there is no admission fee. Bring your lawn chairs.
The event will be the second in as many years honoring the former SC State track standout, who was among nine people killed in a mass shooting at (Mother) Emanuel Church in Charleston in 2015. Coleman-Singleton competed for the Lady Bulldogs 1987-1891 and was a member of the 1987-88 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship Team.
Twelve teams, mostly from the Palmetto State, will be in Saturday's field, including Allen, Benedict, Claflin, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Newberry, host SC State USC-Beaufort and Voorhees. Also among the participants are Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State, as well as two track clubs.
The meet will be the only home meet of the season for Coach Donald Cooper and his teams, which have been impressive in its competition thus far, including last week's outing at the USC Gamecock Invitational where junior
Kennedy Spears won the high jump, several other SC State participants earned podium spots and the teams combined to set over 15 personal records (PRs).
During a special 11 a.m. ceremony Saturday, SC State will honor its senior track members and recognize returning track performers and members of the Coleman-Singleton family.
