SC State Names Alumnus Edward Halsell Head Women’s Golf Coach

Former professional golfer will lead revived program while managing Hillcrest Golf Course

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Women's golf is returning to South Carolina State University, and alumnus and former professional golfer Edward Halsell will lead the program's revival as head coach.Halsell also will serve as general manager of Hillcrest Golf Course under the university's new joint management agreement with the City of Orangeburg.

Experienced Bulldog to lead program revival
SC State President Alexander Conyers said Halsell's experience as a player, instructor and business leader makes him uniquely qualified to lead the program's return.

"Coach Halsell brings a unique combination of coaching ability, player development experience and a deep understanding of the game that makes him an outstanding choice to lead our women's golf program," Conyers said. "His dual role as head coach and golf professional at Hillcrest Golf Course creates valuable opportunities for our student-athletes to train and compete in a first-class environment while strengthening the partnership between the university and the City of Orangeburg.

"We are not simply bringing back a sport; we are investing in young women who will represent South Carolina State University with excellence in the classroom, on the course and in their communities," Conyers said. "Under Coach Halsell's leadership, I am confident this program will become another source of pride for Bulldog Nation."

A former Bulldogs golfer, PGA tour competitor, instructor and golf operations leader, Halsell brings more than three decades of experience to the dual role as SC State expands opportunities for women student-athletes and strengthens its commitment to competitive athletics.

Building a championship culture

Halsell said the opportunity to build a program from the ground up made the position especially meaningful.

"The opportunity to lead the rebirth of the women's golf program is truly special," Halsell said. "Building a program from the ground up allows us to create a strong culture, establish a clear vision and provide student-athletes with opportunities to excel both academically and athletically. I am excited to help shape the future of women's golf at South Carolina State University and build a program that our student-athletes, alumni and university community can be proud of for years to come."

He said his vision extends beyond wins and losses.

"I am committed to building a championship culture, developing student-athletes and expanding opportunities for young women in collegiate golf," Halsell said.

Veteran player, instructor and entrepreneur

A South Carolina State graduate with a bachelor's degree in sociology, Halsell competed on the Bulldogs men's golf team before turning professional in 1995. He played on the NGA Professional Golf Tour, the Dakotas Tour and the South America PGA Tour, capturing the Elmwood Golf Classic in Watertown, South Dakota.

After his professional playing career, Halsell served as assistant golf professional at Stoneybrook West Golf Club and Stoneybrook at Heritage Harbour Golf Links before becoming head golf professional at Heritage Golf Links in Tucker, Georgia. In 2009, he founded Ed Halsell Golf Academy, where he developed instructional programs for junior, amateur and competitive golfers, and later founded H&R Insurance Agency, gaining experience in business management, client development and strategic planning.

In his dual role, Halsell will oversee operations, programming and community engagement at Hillcrest Golf Course while establishing the foundation for SC State's revived women's golf program.

Expanding opportunities for women student-athletes

Restoring women's golf reinforces the university's commitment to providing equitable opportunities for women in athletics.

"Reinstating women's golf reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding opportunities for women in athletics and supporting the principles of Title IX," SC State Athletic Director Oliver "Buddy" Pough said. "Our goal is to provide equitable access to high-quality academic and athletic experiences while creating pathways for leadership, competition and personal development.

"This investment strengthens our university and demonstrates our commitment to serving all of our students," Pough said.
