SC State Falls to Elon in Home Soccer Matchup

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State women's soccer suffered a 6-0 setback to Elon Thursday evening at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on Willie Jeffries Field.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 0-2 on the season, while Elon improved to 2-0. Elon scored four goals in the opening half before adding two after intermission.

Elon opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Jess Beck found the back of the net off an assist from Isa Murdock. SC State responded with its best scoring opportunity of the opening half in the 22nd minute when Emmi Sullivan put a shot on goal, but Elon goalkeeper Naomi Person made the save.

The Phoenix extended their advantage in the 32nd minute on Gabby Tirado's goal, assisted by Grace Gelhaus. Hannah Carlson pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute with an assist from Talia Feigin before Jordan Green scored in the 42nd minute to give Elon a 4-0 halftime advantage.

Elon continued its offensive pressure early in the second half. Emerson Rogers scored just 1:19 after intermission on an assist from Gia Milano to extend the margin to 5-0. SC State goalkeeper Alexa Smith, who entered to begin the second half, followed with saves in the 51st and 59th minutes to keep the Lady Bulldogs within striking distance.

SC State generated another opportunity in the 69th minute when Eiliyah Tomes fired a shot that went high and right. Beck closed the scoring for Elon in the 84th minute, recording her second goal of the match off an assist from Charlise Grimes.

Elon finished with a 13-2 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Phoenix also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Sullivan recorded SC State's lone shot on goal, while Tomes accounted for the Lady Bulldogs' other shot.

SC State used two goalkeepers in the contest. Jada Gittings played the opening 45 minutes and recorded one save, while Smith made two saves during the second half.

UP NEXT
South Carolina State returns to action Sunday, Aug. 23, when the Lady Bulldogs travel to face Mercer. First kick is scheduled for 2 p.m.
