CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina State women's soccer showed increased offensive pressure in the second half but could not overcome an early deficit, falling 8-0 to The Citadel on Thursday evening at Washington Light Infantry Field.
Despite the final score, SC State produced one of its more active attacking stretches after halftime, generating seven of its 10 total shots in the second period. The Bulldogs also put three shots on goal and earned two corner kicks in the match.
The Citadel (2-1-1) scored three times in the opening half before adding five goals after the break. SC State moved to 0-4 on the season.
SC State continued to compete offensively after halftime.
Denive Guy-Williams put a shot on target in the 51st minute, forcing a save from The Citadel goalkeeper Zoe Santos. Aaliyah Silver followed with another shot on goal in the 64th minute. SC State also generated attempts from
Kelis Santana-Goulbourne and Liya Ferguson during a productive stretch of offensive pressure.
Sarah Listrom remained aggressive late in the contest. The midfielder finished with a team-high two shots, including an attempt on goal in the 87th minute. Guy-Williams also recorded two shots with one on target. Silver accounted for SC State's other shot on goal.
SC State's attack was balanced throughout the lineup as eight Lady Bulldogs recorded at least one shot. Ayla Tindall,
Vanessa Coleman, Ferguson, Santana-Goulbourne and Eiliyah Tomes each added an attempt as SC State finished with 10 shots overall.
Defensively, goalkeeper
Jada Gittings faced consistent pressure and recorded seven saves in 70 minutes, 43 seconds of action. Alexa Smith played the final 19:17 and added a save. The Lady Bulldogs were credited with 11 saves as a team.
Next Up: South Carolina State return to action on Sunday (Sept. 29) on the road at Wofford in a 2 p.m. start.
