SCSU SETS TWO SCHOOL RECORDS, ONE MEAC MARK

RATLIFF NABS OUTSTANDING FIELD HONORS AT 2024 MEAC TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS; WOMEN FINISH FOURTH AND MEN SIXTH OVERALL

NORFOLK, VA – South Carolina State senior Dexter Ratliff won two events, set one of two school records and erased one MEAC championship mark on his way to capturing Outstanding Field Athlete honors at the three-day (May 6-8) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship hosted by Norfolk State at Dick Price Stadium.

Also establishing a school record was the men's 4x400 meter relay team of Isaiah Vertus, Jacob Alexander, Jaden Barker and Jovan Brooks, which was clocked in a time of 3:06.91, erasing the 43-year old mark of 3:07.30 set in 1981. In addition, the SC State teams combined to establish a number of personal records as well as several season-best showings.

Ratliff won the men's discus (50.93m) on Monday and added the hammer on Tuesday with a record-setting toss (55.21m), breaking a five-year old MEAC record, and also eclipsing the school record of 54.34m which he set earlier in the year. The two wins gave him 20 points and he added another point in the shotput to give him enough to take MEAC Outstanding Field Performer accolades.

The men added 44 points Wednesday for a total of 78 points and fifth in the team standings, while the women scored an additional 52 points for a total of 79 and a fourth place finish. The point totals were the highest for both SC State squads in recent years.

Host Norfolk State compiled 204 points to win the men's competition, ahead of Howard which was second with 118. The Howard women amassed 231 points to earn the women's title, with Norfolk finishing second with 199.

Coach Donald Cooper's teams added two more gold medals on Wednesday as Brooks finished first in the men's 400 meters in a personal record 46.00 time, while Areyanna Scott took top honors in the women's javelin with a throw of 42.50m (139-5 ft.), earning 10 points each.

Other top performers on the day included the women's 4x400 meter relay team of TyQwasia Williams, Maya Smith, Debrielle Williams and Angelica Frederick, which completed the course in 3:40.41, the second-best time in school history in finishing second in the event.

Also earning points for Cooper's teams on Wednesday were the men's 4x100 relay team, the women's 4x400 relay team, Frederick in the women's 400 meters (54.0), Mion Frierson and Imani Sells in the javelin, Sydney Cooper in the women's pole vault, Debrielle Williams and Makylah in the 800 meters, Cameran Gist in the triple jump, Jameli Thomas in the men's triple jump, Kenton George in the men's pole vault, Thomas and Jonathan Williams in the 110m hurdles, Williams and Thomas in the 400m hurdles, and Keondre Dickson in the men's javelin.

Three SC State entrant earned automatic qualifying marks for the May 22-25 NCAA Regional at Lexington, KY. They are Ratliff in the discus, Brooks in the 400 meters and the men's 4x400m relay team. Several others improved their marks in the Region and may qualify provisionally.
