ORANGEBURG, SC – SC State held its second preseason scrimmage Saturday morning and followed the workout with the annual "Meet the Players Day," hosted by The STATE Club, the Bulldog booster organization.
In the scrimmage, which lasted approximately two hours, the Bulldog coaching staff ran about 75-plays on offense to allow both quarterbacks a chance to lead their units. Several injured Bulldogs didn't participate in today's scrimmage, with such notables as junior defensive lineman
Javon Hargrave and senior offensive lineman
Domanic Wilson just to name a few.
Redshirt sophomore
Adrian Kollock, Jr. seemed to be the most productive of the signal callers on the day, directing several scoring drives, two of which finished with touchdown runs by Kollock, Jr., and
Justin Taylor.
Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough, who is entering his 13th season at the helm of the Bulldog football program, said he saw, in Saturday's scrimmage, some improvements from the first scrimmage conducted a week earlier (Aug. 9).
"We got off to an early start on offense but the defense finished stronger to even things out," Pough said. "We made some strides and did some good things on both sides of the ball," Pough said. "Obviously we still got some work to do. It's a work in progress."
In commenting on the play of the Bulldog defense, Pough said that he was impressed with the way some of the young guys played on defense, while equally impressed with some of the receivers like
Taquan West and Trey Samuel who made some big catches down the stretch.
Freshman place kicker Tyler Scandrett seemed to be making himself at home in the Bulldogs starting lineup connecting on 42-yard and 32-yard field goals on the day. Scandrett was also 3-3 on PAT's.
Pough also noted that the with the Bulldogs preseason camp coming to an end on Monday with one final practice, he plans to get a solid workout in before preparing for Benedict on next week.
South Carolina State will open the 2014 season on the road in the Palmetto Capital City Classic against intrastate rival Benedict College on Aug. 30, in a 5 p.m. kickoff at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
