MBB:Late Rally Falls Short For Bulldogs 75-65

Box Score ORANGEBURG, SC—The South Carolina State Bulldogs suffered their second straight conference loss in a, 75-65, defeat by Howard University Monday (Feb.23) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

South Carolina State falls to 10-19 overall, 7-7 in the MEAC, while Howard improves to 15-13 overall, 9-5 in the league. The Bulldogs were without their leading rebounder and starting small forward Darryl Palmer and backup point guard Ty Solomon due to injuries suffered in Saturday's game against UMES.

SC State was led by sophomore guard Greg Mortimer with a team-high 17 points. Teammates junior forward Gabe McCray added 11 and seven rebounds, while the MEAC Rookie of the Week Edward Stephens was limited to 10 points and three assists.

Howard had three players in double figures with senior forward James Carlton recording the games only double-double with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard James Daniel III shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line to finish with 16 points, while forward James Miller tossed in 19 and seven rebounds in the win.

The Bison dominated the paint outscoring the Bulldogs 48-28, despite a game-high 15 turnovers. Free-throws seemed to be the determining factor down the stretch as Howard shot 80% (20-of-25).

SC State returns to action on Saturday (Feb.28) in a pivotal MEAC doubleheader with Savannah State at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. Both teams will be celebrating "Senior Day" and will salute and honor two players from each team , along with the seniors from the men's and women's track & field teams during halftime of each game.

Tipoff for the women is 4 p.m., with the men following immediately afterwards in a 6 p.m. start.
