ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State's
Marketa Marcanikova finished first at the Bulldog Duels Cross Country meet Saturday, helping the SC State women to a second-place overall showing at the event conducted at the Matthews Industrial Park.
SC State finished fourth in the men's division of the event, only the second-ever cross country meet hosted by the university, both coming under the tenure of current head coach
Tim Langford.
"Hosting a cross country meet gives our kids a chance to experience a hometown crowd effect," Langford said. "It's also a good opportunity for the community to come out and support. This (hosting a meet) is something we strived to do from the start. It has come to fruition and makes a big difference."
Marcanikova, who won for the second time in as many weeks, covered the 5K course in a time of 19:18.1, well ahead of runner-up finisher Maddison Burkholder of Charleston Southern, who had a 21:01.1 clocking to help her team to the title in the women's division with 25 points.
"I was very impressed with Marketa as she blew the competition away," said Langford of Marcanikova's performance. "She has really come on as a cross country runner, improving all the time. And, Stackhouse ran well on the men's side. He was in front of the pack for most of the event and ended up with a personal record. I'm very proud of them both."
The Lady Bulldogs were second with 48 points, followed Claflin with 68 points, Savannah State fourth with 83 and Morris fifth with 115.
Michael Stackhouse was the top performer for the SC State men, finishing eighth in the 8K run with a time of 28:16.1, a personal record for the Bulldog senior. Charleston Southern's Jeryk Wilson won the men's division in a time of 26:06.7 to lead his team to a second-place finish in the men's competition.
