Brittany Drumgoole tossed in a team-high 21 points each, but it wasn't enough as SC State dropped a tough 72-70 loss to Delaware State Saturday (Jan.21) at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
South Carolina State falls to 3-12 overall, 0-4 in the MEAC, while Delaware State improves to 2-16 overall, 1-4 in the league.
Junior forward
Jahmia Bradley finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore
JaQuanna Murray chipped in nine rebounds and four points in the loss.
Delaware State was led by NaJai Pollard with a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds, while teammate Mikah Aldridge added 16 and Lorna Caesar 11 points and five assist in the win.
DSU jumped out to its biggest lead of the first-half taking an 11-point advantage, 22-11, off driving layup by Pollard with 5:37 remaining in the 2
nd quarter. A long range three-pointer by Drumgoole with 0:35 seconds remaining in the half cut the lead to five, 23-28.
The second-half the Lady Bulldogs came to life with Drumgoole pouring in a 16 of her 21-point performance. A three-pointer by Drumgoole early in the fourth quarter cut the lead to one, 52-51 at the 8:48 mark.
A layup by Bradley with 0.10 seconds remaining tied the game 70-70. Pollard's put back with 0:03 seconds left off a missed three-pointer Alycea Sharpe sealed the win for the Lady Hornets.
Despite the loss, the Lady Bulldogs dominated in several categories including redounds (44-42), points in the paint (30-30), 2
nd chance points (20-15), fast break points (14-6) and bench points (27-13).
South Carolina State returns to action on Monday (Jan. 23) against visiting Morgan State in the first of an MEAC doubleheader. The women begin at 5:30 pm., with the men following immediately afterwards in a 7:30 p.m. start.
