Meet Jada Gittings, a new Clyburn Scholar in the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University proudly welcomes Jada Gittings, an accomplished scholar, athlete, and leader from Hampton County High School, as a new inductee in the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College.

Now a freshman at SC State majoring in elementary education, Gittings' high school achievements in academics, athletics, and community service make her a stellar addition to the Clyburn Scholar program.

"Jada truly embodies the core values that define the Clyburn Honors College: a dedication to academic excellence, a relentless pursuit of athletic and personal growth, and a deep commitment to service," said Dr. William H. Whitaker Jr., Honors College dean. "Her steadfast commitment to excellence and her impressive leadership set a high standard for her peers. We eagerly anticipate the many ways she will make a lasting impact within our community here at South Carolina State University."

Throughout her high school career, Jada exemplified academic excellence and leadership. She consistently earned spots on the Principal's Honor Roll, achieved Academic Excellence awards from 2020 to 2024, and served as a Junior Marshall, a distinction recognizing the top students in her class.

As a recipient of the President's Education Award and Junior Scholar designations from institutions such as USC Upstate, USC Aiken, and Clemson University's Emerging Scholars Program, Gittings demonstrated a commitment to her studies and ambition for higher learning.

Gittings' leadership extended beyond the classroom. She served as Junior Class vice president, represented Hampton County at ALA Palmetto Girls State, and was active in clubs such as the National Beta Club, Emerging Scholars, and the Broadcast Journalism Club. She also participated in the Teacher Cadet program, sharing her love of learning by reading to elementary students.

An accomplished multi-sport athlete, Gittings was recognized with numerous accolades, including the MVP in varsity soccer and All-Region honors in both soccer and volleyball. She was a four-year scholar-athlete and received the Player of the Year award in soccer. Her dedication to athletics is evident through her involvement with the Tormenta FC Academy and her roles on her high school volleyball, soccer, and cheerleading teams.

Gittings' commitment to service is equally impressive. She has volunteered extensively through the Beta Club, worked with the Booster Club's concessions, assisted in her church's afterschool program, and represented her community as the Watermelon Festival Belle. Her passion for giving back reflects the values of the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College and the spirit of South Carolina State University.

As a Clyburn Scholar, Gittings joins a select group of students who are committed to academic success, leadership, and community impact. The Honors College is thrilled to support her continued growth and achievements at SC State.
